Greenville County Motorcycle Crash: 34-Year-Old Killed

What Happened?

On the afternoon of July 12, 2025, a fatal crash occurred at the intersection of North Washington Avenue and US‑123 in Greenville County. According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, 34-year-old Kevin Leonard Schwenneker, from Piedmont, SC, was riding southbound on US‑123 when he attempted to cross the intersection and struck the passenger side of a GMC SUV, which was turning left. Schwenneker was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after due to his injuries.

The SUV driver and four passengers also sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash in collaboration with the coroner’s office

Legal Considerations for Families

When a motor vehicle crash results in a fatality, there are important civil pathways, separate from any criminal case:

  • Negligence & Fault:
It must be determined whether the SUV driver failed to yield, if the motorcyclist had right of way, and other contributing factors like road design, traffic signals, or visibility.

  • Comparative Negligence:
South Carolina follows a “modified comparative negligence” rule, allowing recovery if the victim (or their estate) is less than 51% at fault.

  • Wrongful Death Claims:
The victim’s family may file a wrongful death lawsuit to seek compensation for funeral costs, medical bills, lost income, and emotional suffering.

Steps for Loved Ones to Take

1. Obtain Official Reports & Records
Secure the crash report, medical records, and coroner’s findings to build your case.

2. Preserve Evidence
Include photos of the scene, bike damage, and visibility conditions.

3. Be Mindful of Deadlines
South Carolina’s wrongful death statute gives three years from the date of death to file a claim.

4. Consult an Attorney
An experienced personal injury lawyer can investigate liability, navigate insurance complexities, and ensure all legal deadlines are met.

Safety Tips for Motorcyclists & Drivers

  • Motorcyclists: Use headlights, wear high‑visibility gear, and be cautious when crossing intersections.

  • Drivers: Watch for motorcycles, signal turns early, and ensure intersections are clear before proceeding.

  • Communities: Improving intersection design, adding biker‑aware signage, and enhancing driver education can reduce accidents.
